Pietermaritzburg SPCA

charity profile

The Pietermaritzburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) provides a comprehensive service to a large community in order to fulfill our mandate to prevent cruelty, neglect and suffering to ALL animals.

Like all SPCAs in South Africa, the Pietermaritzburg SPCA is governed by the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA), which is a statutory body that was founded in 1955 as the Federation of SPCAs to provide a forum to bring uniformity to animal welfare legislation and standards. The SPCAs in South Africa are governed by the SPCA Act 169 of 1993 which is administered by the NSPCA. Inspectors are authorised in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 and the Performing Animals Protection Act No. 24 of 1935 with the SPCA movement collectively undertaking over 90% of all animal welfare investigations and prosecutions in South Africa. The Pietermaritzburg SPCA is led by a management committee made up of interested individuals that voluntarily give their time to this cause. Our SPCA then comprises a team of staff that handle all day to day tasks and activities that keep the SPCA running well.
