Andre Botes is raising funds for CHOC

I was privileged to secure a spot on the 8 Mile Club this year which sees participants swimming in each of the 8 groups starting the Midmar Mile. This means that we will swim 4 Midmar miles on Saturday and 4 Midmar Miles on Sunday (whew!) We start every 1h15mins, complete the Mile and then get shipped back to the start to do it all over again (and again, and again...) To be an 8 Miler, one commits to raising R10,000 for charity and the charity I have chosen this year is CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation. Some of the services CHOC provides is educating healthcare practitioners, traditional healers and communities, assisting children referred by paediatric oncologists, and providing psychosocial support and assistance for children in the recovery phase to transition back to their normal lives. This is not about me or about the swim; it is about helping the victims of childhood cancer. To walk the talk, I am donating R500 of my own money to kickstart the process but you may give any amount you wish to – my goal is to exceed the R10,000 minimum and by being allowed to participate I undertake to making up any shortfall myself. I am inspired by the words of Martin Luther King, Jr... Life's most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?
