The Sunflower Fund

charity profile

The Sunflower Fund is a South African non-profit organisation dedicated to creating awareness, educating the public, recruiting and facilitating the registration process for people to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR).

Increasing the number of donors listed on the national database offers hope to hundreds of South Africans with chronic blood disorders, such as leukaemia, who have reached the point where their only chance of survival is a blood stem cell transplant.

Why we need you…

Unfortunately chronic blood conditions affect people all over the world, regardless of background, location, ethnicity, age or wealth. The diagnosis of a dread disease like leukaemia is not only devastating to the individual, but is equally traumatising for family, friends and colleagues. It leaves no-one untouched and the job of The Sunflower Fund is to reach out the best way we know how – through our expertise in increasing donor numbers for the SABMR.

A larger Registry significantly improves patients’ prospects of finding matching blood stem cell donors in order to undergo life-saving stem cell transplants. However to do this, we need you!

How you can help…

The Sunflower Fund relies solely on financial assistance from its dedicated funders – consisting of individuals, companies and organisations.

The tissue typing of each blood sample at the required molecular (DNA) level currently costs The Sunflower Fund on average R2 000 per test.  Donors are asked to make a voluntary contribution towards this expense, but most of these costs are covered by The Sunflower Fund.

We appeal to you, an ordinary person making an extraordinary difference, to make a financial contribution.  No amount is too small as collectively, this will make a large impact on the lives of others.

Help create Hope…

Your contribution will help The Sunflower Fund to achieve a diverse and ethnically representative database of prospective blood stem cell donors offering the hope of life to so many.
